Surely depending on what distro you're running, I'd say. Using RedHat or
something similar, you might use chkconfig to get your alsasound startup
script initialized correctly. Here, on Slack 8, I am handling things this
way:

() having a line, like

/sbin/modprobe snd-card-0

in /etc/rc.d/rc.modules, same as 

() an entry
/usr/sbin/alsactl restore 0

in /etc/rc.d/rc.local. Most of the things, of course, depend on where your
alsa stuff is located and what / how many sound cards you are having in
your machine. At least, it's a pretty fast way for Slack, and it works. :)
