This may or may not be related but I used to have this same problem in
Windows98 (the only way I can get sound so far) It turned out that my
soundcard was sharing either an irq or io address (I don't remember which)
with another card. I fixed this by moving the cards to different slots
which changed their address' and/or irqs and it never happened again. It
may be worth a shot.
