I am using alsa 0.5 without problems but I would like to use the latest
versions of xine. These only seem to fully support alsa 0.9. Unfortunately,
I can get neither the onboard chip nor the SB PCI sound card to work with
0.9. Everything compiles and installs no problem but when I try to load the
drivers I get the frustating messages:

  Dec 1 22:35:45 linux kernel: ALSA card-via686a.c:1191: VIA 82C686A
soundcard not found or device busy
Dec 1 22:35:45 linux kernel: ALSA card-ens1370.c:2041: Ensoniq AudioPCI
soundcard not found or device busy

Reconfiguring and recompiling the drivers with "debug=detect" or
"debug=full" does not give me any more information. How do I debug this
further?

System:

ECS Elitegroup K7VZA mainboard (with KT133A/686B)
  SB PCI 128 sound card
  SuSE 7.2 with kernel 2.4.4

Modules.conf:
  alias char-major-116 snd
  options snd snd_cards_limit=2 snd_major=116
  alias snd-card-0 snd-card-via686a
  alias snd-card-1 snd-card-ens1371
  options snd-card-ens1371 snd_id=card2 snd_index=1
  options snd-card-via686a snd_id=card1 snd_index=0

The above works fine with alsa 0.5
