I found the problem, with a bit of help.

It was because of a symlink from /usr/include/sound
pointing to the old beta4 package. I had though this
would be clobbered when the newer driver was
installed, but it was not.

I now have a working ALSA system, sho' is funky.

Thanks to those who helped out.
