Hi,
Iam using RH 7.2 with the standard kernal and have succesfully managed to
get the alsa-driver,alsa-libs,alsa-utils installed.

Iam using a Yamaha Corporation YMF-724 sound card.

>From what I see I presume that all the alsa drivers have installed in:
/lib/modules/2.4.9-13/misc

So am I correct In thinking that I do not have to delete or recompile the
kernel to remove the standard oss drivers that came with the kernel??

I load the alsa modules with: /sbin/modprobe snd-ymfpci

The modules that this loads are as follows:

snd-ymfpci 37840 0 (unused)
snd-pcm 50400 0 [snd-ymfpci]
snd-timer 9936 0 [snd-pcm]
snd-ac97-codec 23408 0 [snd-ymfpci]
snd 27680 0 [snd-ymfpci snd-pcm snd-timer
snd-ac97-codec]
soundcore

But when I come to play say a mp3, Iam not sure If Iam using the standard
oss drivers or the alsa ones as the output when playing a mp3 is:

ymfpci 41248 1 (autoclean)
uart401 6544 0 (autoclean) [ymfpci]
sound 59712 0 (autoclean) [uart401]
ac97_codec 9440 0 (autoclean) [ymfpci]
snd-ymfpci 37840 0 (unused)
snd-pcm 50400 0 [snd-ymfpci]
snd-timer 9936 0 [snd-pcm]
snd-ac97-codec 23408 0 [snd-ymfpci]
snd 27680 0 [snd-ymfpci snd-pcm snd-timer
snd-ac97-codec]
soundcore 4432 4 [ymfpci sound snd]

As looking at this Its still using the original sound drivers..

How would I go about only using the alsa drivers, would I have to recompile
the kernel with no sound support what so ever, then install the alsa
drivers/libs/utils, So it would only use those??

( I have thead the README and Howto's, but still unsure)

This is a test pc, as the main one uses a SB Live and when I run games and
other apps, the sound just locks, there are no IRQ conflicts, so thats why i
wanted to use the Alsa drivers, as i removed RH and then Installed Linux
Mandrake 8.1 (which If Iam correct uses the Alsa drivers) and it worked
great, but as ive been using RH for the past 4 years, I really would like to
carry on using it..but hopefully with the Alsa drivers, that should remove
the locking problem.

Regards

Mark
