I tried upgrading SuSE's preinstalled alsa 0.5.11 to 0.9.0beta8(a) but I am still getting "Sound protocol is not compatible" errors when starting aplay or amixer and /proc/asound/version still gives 0.5.11 What I did was trying to update via rpm as described at SuSE, but as I got the errors I uninstalled and tried to do it manually - same result. I read that this might be caused by old libraries, but I made sure there were no libasound.* in /usr/lib after deinstallation, so I am a bit puzzled here. Could anybody throw me a bone? Thanks!
