FYI Mandrake Linux 8.1 has ALSA version 0.5.11 on the CD's.
[frans@localhost frans]$ rpm -qf /lib/modules/2.4.8-26mdk/alsa/snd-card-opl3sa2.o.gz
kernel-2.4.8-26mdk
[frans@localhost frans]$
So the ALSA modules where installed on your HD along with the kernel.
