I got it to finally work with the latest 0.5 version. The problem was indeed the mixer channels being muted, which I swear I checked a bunch of times but it was still muted after all. The one thing is that aplay will not play most wav files. Anyhow sound works great with KDE it's just that I can't play most wav files using aplay.
