I'm not absolutely sure whether this belongs here or on alsa-devel.

I've been using the alsa-oss package to (for example) allow timdity++ to work
properly on my Midiman Audiophile. I've been running from current CVS and
just doing ./cvscompile and "make install" without really looking at what was
happening, so it was only yesterday that I noticed that it now only builds a
static library and a .la file. (seems to be since just after beta7) though
browsing the CVS repository I can't see where the change happened.

The question is one of:
1) Am I doing something stupid?
2) If not then how do I use the static library and .la file (i.e. the
replacement for (e.g.)
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/local/lib/libaoss.so timidity -ig rg_overture.mid)?

TIA
        James
