Cable (verb)
contact or send a message to (someone) by cablegram.

Cable (noun, lesser meaning)
    a cablegram, abbrev.

"we cabled to a boat at sea, asking it to stop"
"we received a cable"

Maybe a bit archaic/19th Century.
