In one of the previous currency systems (one that I think worked, as
opposed to the one Zefram mentions that apparently didn't), taxes were
a tool to control inflation (a needed check when the basis is virtual),
and ensure "playability" (e.g. make sure a gerontocracy didn't form
to make obstacles too high for new players).

You might want to take a look at currency rules in this ruleset from 2002:
