I seriously consider myself a crackpot until one of my ideas actually works. I may be working with refined ideas that follow numerous patterns of feasibility or technical sensibility, but if I cannot produce anything worthwhile or which demonstrates some useful or interesting activity then am I really exempt from crackpotism just because I avoid the exaggerated delusions? Every researcher spends most of his time working on something that hasn't got much of an immediate payoff, but you have to have something to show for your work and if you don't have anything after years of thought then all you have is ideas.
