I thought you meant some kind of solder paste or slag but that looks like broken off pieces of a heatsink retention bracket or something like that.

I received a used Arista switch, and I noticed it rattled. I opened the cover and dumped out this grey debris. I looked on the circuit board and I see the stuff clearly came from some kind of border around the switch's ASIC. What is this stuff? Is the switch likely to operate without it? -Adam
