Yah. A lot of things could have been done. I would think blowing the hatch below some arbitrary depth would pretty much be instant death.

Why not a power and comm tether to the mother ship?  I realize it is 12,500' of cable but fiber optics are pretty much neutrally buoyant.

But no underwater pinger.  No ELT.  How about a sat tel or VHF radio.  Some kind of way to talk to the world.  No high pressure air to blow tanks.  I would have wanted explosive bolts on the hatch if there was no other way to get out.  But why not some kind of fresh air intake assuming you could surface.  This haunts my sleep.
