Mine records only for a certain period after the ignition is off, and has enough storage that it won't overwrite for something like 36 hours of storage.
I also have learned to keep a second sd card for it in the glove box since there have been a couple instances where I needed to be 100% the footage was intact, and the best way to do that is to swap the SD card to a new one.
