I remember my dad bought a new house in the suburbs with a spot in the parkway
where no matter what he did, the grass always turned brown. Finally he went to
dig it up and discovered they had laid sod over a manhole cover.

I’m not saying there was a layer of dirt over the manhole, it was directly
under the sod. Only metal detector required was a shovel.

I am guessing it is magnetic detector. He uses it to find manhole covers that
have been paved over and valve bodies.

Was it a metal detector or a magnetic locator? The former can only detect down
~12" max. the latter can detect pretty deep depending on the size of the
object. I'd guess a drill head could be found 6-10' down.

Our water guys can barely find the valves on top of the ground and to find
anything under the ground they use a poking stick until it hits something then
draw a blue line.

This is why we use a GPR to find the water lines but it will pick up almost all
the utilities.

We use one of these.

Had a drill rod break today. The guys did not know where the end was because
the sonde went to sleep on them. Had the local water guy go over with his
metal detector and help them find it.

I am going to ask him what kind he has. Anyone here use them? Any opinions?
