The simplest explanation is that the mirror doesn't flip left, right, up, or down; it simply reflects.

It's us that flip left and right when we turn around. If we turned around by standing on our heads, the up/down would be reversed.

Seems like what he is saying is that we see ourselves in a mirror from the perspective of our side of the mirror, so basically from behind us.  If our head was transparent, we would be seeing our face from the back, and our right eye would be on the right, whereas when someone looks at us from the front our right eye is actually on their left.

 

Maybe that’s the real puzzle – when I look at you, why is your right eye on the left?  OMG, the mirror isn’t backwards, real life is backwards!
