I have seen backup generators actually stalled out when attempting to start two
bard AC units on a telecom shelter. That is what happens when a guy goes cheap
on the generator sizing. Sure it would pull the running load just fine.

I had to develop some kind of circuit to not start the AC until the gen had
been running for a while. I think I also did something to prevent them from
both operating during a power outage.

Most of the new ones are AC Variable speed drives. The drive rectifies the
incoming power into about 350V DC before converting it back to a variable
frequency AC to drive the compressor at whatever speed it needs. Good drives
could care less what the incoming power looks like since all they are doing is
turning it into DC through a big rectifier. Now what feeds back to the power
line from the drive can be really ugly but that’s a different subject.

Biggest issue with the older geothermal was the compressor inrush current was
high. You needed a pretty substantial generator to get them started.

My brother has a geothermal heating\cooling system. The primary reason he got
a generator was to run the geothermal system.

The people that sold the geothermal system to him told him that he shouldn't
run the geothermal system on the generator.

  Why would this be?

Could he purchase a line conditioner of some sort to clean the power before
it gets to the geothermal system?

I'm not sure of the size, but it's one of those Bobcat portable
welder\generators and he hooks it up to a transfer switch at the meter for his
farm.
