Most of the new ones are AC Variable speed drives. The drive rectifies the incoming power into about 350V DC before converting it back to a variable frequency AC to drive the compressor at whatever speed it needs. Good drives could care less what the incoming power looks like since all they are doing is turning it into DC through a big rectifier. Now what feeds back to the power line from the drive can be really ugly but that’s a different subject.
Biggest issue with the older geothermal was the compressor inrush current was high. You needed a pretty substantial generator to get them started.
