Simon I have had to do a similar thing. I am pretty sure this is how it has to be done. In my case I need a lot of fields from the ad performance report but I also need to know which keywords were applied to that add. Since its not on that report I have to call the keyword report with certain predicates then merge the records back in. Its not what I would call fun or intuitive if you aren't familiar Adwords in general.
