You are correct! It was ad distribution (adWordsType) that was my problem. The saved reports in the login area are pretty useful in debugging this sort of thing. It'd be great to see an article about them on the main web site.
I ran the report I wanted by hand, then looked at the saved API reports and kept tweeking the API calls until the two matched. Nice.
