One thing that is supported if your servers are 6.3: You can set up node replication from one server to another, and the 2 servers don't have to be the same platform. Then kill off the old server.
But for V5, export/import is the only supported way. And depending on your network, your available hardware, number of clients, your avg data retention time, export/import maybe faster anyway. Your biggest problem will be that either with export/import or replication, you need double the media, as all the data has to move to the format supported by the target server. -----Original Message----- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU] On Behalf Of Loon, EJ van - SPLXM Sent: Thursday, April 04, 2013 10:49 AM To: ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU Subject: Re: [ADSM-L] Moving TSM server from AIX to Linux >From the 6.4 manuals: Restriction: In most cases, you cannot upgrade your server to run on an operating system that is different from the operating system that it currently runs on. For example, you cannot upgrade a server that is running on an AIX(r) system to a server on a Linux system. The only exception is a cross-platform upgrade from a V5 server that is running on z/OS(r) to a V6.3 or later server on AIX or Linux on System z(r). For more information about the cross-platform upgrade, see Migrating Tivoli Storage Manager V5 servers on z/OS systems to V6 on AIX or Linux on System z. So although it might work, it's not supported! The linux was running as a guest under VM on our mainframe. -----Original Message----- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU] On Behalf Of James Choate Sent: Thursday, April 04, 2013 9:50 AM To: ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU Subject: Re: [ADSM-L] Moving TSM server from AIX to Linux Is it really as easy as just installing a new server on the new platform and then restoring a db? I wasn't aware that you could restore a db across platforms. I thought you would have to export/import the nodes out of the AIX server into the Linux server. -----Original Message----- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU] On Behalf Of Lee, Gary Sent: Thursday, April 04, 2013 7:36 AM To: ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU Subject: Re: Moving TSM server from AIX to Linux Shouldn't be a big deal. However, tougher with v6 than v5. You should be able to restore a db backup after installing the new server. Then, define storage pools, tape drives, and libraries as necessary. -----Original Message----- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU] On Behalf Of Troy A Cross Sent: Thursday, April 04, 2013 9:28 AM To: ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU Subject: [ADSM-L] Moving TSM server from AIX to Linux ADSM-L mailing list, I've been tasked with the project to move our TSM server from AIX to Linux (prefer RedHat or CentOS).
