This is supposed to be *NEW*. Nothing labeled "refurbished". The support on this hasn't been the greatest. Mostly self-service (i.e. they sent me the drive and I installed it myself - not that I am complaining since I can handle this kinda stuff in my sleep).
One problem I fought for a while was constantly getting error messages that said that the library had lost communications with the front control panel. IBM did come out for that one (I had followed the self-serve instructions to the point where it said call for hardware support). IBM brought a replacement logic card that was older than the one in the unit. When they plugged it in, the box refused to power-up. Then when they brought another card (this one was at least as current as the one in the unit), again the library would not power up. So, we went back to the original card. Then, when the CE called L2, after talking with 2-different persons, someone said something about a firmware patch to address the problem. After I upgraded the firmware, haven't had any more of those errors. Thanks for the info about it being a "rebranded" box. Doesn't suprize me. IBM seems to be making less and less equipment (can we say Hitachi hard-drives !). I think if you don't specify you don't get "new". I'm not even sure if you can ask for new parts.. Plus if this is a 3583...that's really an ADIC library. IBM (and Dell!) OEM this library from ADIC. I even had IBM replace a faulty drive with a faulty drive! One interesting problem I've had with several IBM LTO-1/2 drives is that the drive indicates that there's a tape in it, when there really isn't. The drive icon shows a tape, but there ain't! So when TSM asks the library to mount a tape in the drive, you get an I/O error and the ASC/ASCQ codes indicate the the destination element wasn't empty. I even had this on a new drive when I unpacked an IBM3582 library. Before I could use it, I had to call support! Put my project behind 2-days. I started the AUDIT and it has already flagged 2-tapes within the first 5-minutes. I seem to have a bad drive, again. This LTO2 library has been a royal pain since we got it. Once I got all the tapes cleaned off that were flagging the corrupted index, I then monitored each time I got another corruption and it was always the same drive.
