I don't think it is strange, but take a look at the GENERATE BACKUPSET
command.
It was designed to meet exactly the type of requirement you describe - to
create a snapshot of the client that can be restored quickly.  However,
unlike an archive, the BACKUPSET is created from current copies of data on
the server, and you don't have to send everything over the network again.
