This one statement: "Berkeley stopped their distribution of BSD systems right after they were forced to remove the toolchain." is completely wrong. I just asked the people who were there, on TUHS, and they confirmed my memory: DARPA funding for BSD support ended in 1995, and that was probably the biggest factor in ending the UCB activities in BSD.
I think it's important to verify claims with primary sources. Many of those people are still alive.
