Thanks everybody for the insight. I have to admit that I know absolutly nothing 
about networking, so please bear with me (or take over if I'm too slow :). The 
gentoo wiki has good documentation

switching from ifconfig (net-tools) to ip (ip-route2),  so I'll start from 
there.
