that's not an explaination. a recompile of the same code should produce the same results. it's just fortunate that in answering another message in this thread you mentioned a patch to chmod. i'm pretty sure if this is actually the problem then a mk in /sys/src/ape/lib/ap/plan9 would be sufficient after the patch were incorporated. - erik
