The common implementation is an external PLC interface plug, to which an
Ethernet cable is plugged that runs to a free Ethernet port of the Home Router.
But a built-in PLC interface is also well possible, same network diagram in
either case :)

I have a bit of concern about the naming of the "PLC GW" - a gateway as
terminology has a potentially wide scope and may be translating at all layers
(e.g. between different link technologies, or different application layer
command sets, IP to non-IP, or a combination of all these).
If the link technology on top of the PLC GWs is PLC, and on the bottom of the
PLC GWs it is also PLC, then it is more like a "PLC router" (6LR in 6LoWPAN
terms).

If the link technology on top of the PLC GWs is PLC, and on the bottom it is
something different (e.g. wireless 6LoWPAN?) then it is more like a PLC/6LoWPAN
Border Router (6LBR).

It would be useful to clarify here; the role of PLC GW is now a bit confusing.
For example in many houses you can plug the PLC Home Router in the living room,
and another device in the attic, and both sides would connect over powerline
without any gateway/IP-router device in between.

Engineering-wise, it is definitely possible to design a home gateway with a PLC
module inside. Actually it is a good idea. I should suggest it to my Internet
provider :)

I assumed that the HomeRouter had a physical interface that was a PLC.
Maybe it's physically a USB cable, but the PLC's layer-3 interface was inside
the homerouter.
