IMO, it should be a decision left to the user or admin, with the default being verify. (Exactly as it is now.) Because there is a performance-to-reliability tradeoff, and there is a very solid argument that the probability of collision causing data loss is so small that you should instead be more concerned with metoer strike and other improbable failures causing data loss. For some people and some situations, that argument will be good enough - they would opt for the performance increase.
