they dont go into too much detail on their setup, and they are not running Solaris, but they do mention how their SATA cards see different drives, based on where they are placed.... they also have a second revision at http://blog.backblaze.com/2011/07/20/petabytes-on-a-budget-v2-0revealing-more-secrets/ which talks about building their system with 135Tb in a single 45 bay 4U box...
I am also interested in this kind of scale...
