I don't believe your situation is typical. I think you either encountered a bug, or you had something happening that you weren't aware of (scrub, autosnapshots, etc) ... because the only time I've ever seen anything remotely similar to the behavior you described was the bug I've mentioned in other emails, which occurs when disk is 100% full and a scrub is taking place. I know it's not the same bug for you, because you said your pool was only 50% full.
