Hi Robert - I tried all of your suggestions but unfortunately my performance did not improve.
I tested single disk performance and I get 120-140MBps read/write to a single disk. As soon as I add an additional disk (mirror, stripe, raidz) , my performance drops significantly. I'm using 8Gbit FC. From a block standpoint, I suppose it's quite similar to iSCSI. However, performance is the idea in my case - gigabit won't do what I need.
