Obviously, this thread got sidetracked on a tangent about different types of
hardware, be it mac mini, supermicro, dell, or sun/oracle.  But I do find
the subject of legality of ZFS and the netapp lawsuit(s) to be an
interesting subject.  (And thanks to whoever pointed out the information of
how MS VSS is different and inferior; I didn't know.)

Does anybody still have anything to add about the legality?

I think we've concluded:

ZFS is pretty darn safe in solaris/opensolaris.
For some time to come, Netapp may continue bullying others.
There is dispute regarding how much the Netapp lawsuit influenced Apple to
abandon ZFS in OSX.
ZFS is a selling feature for solaris & sun/oracle hardware.
BTRFS may be an alternative someday, but not usable yet.
