The approach you describe may work well. I am using a similar
approach (different hardware) with no issues for over two years now.
Just make sure that your array firmware will allow you to effectively
identify and service a drive which has completely failed. Some arrays
may lose the LUN entirely and require that it be recreated via a
management interface rather than immediately making a new drive
available via the original LUN ID.
