Ok, that's confirmed now. Apparently when the drives ship from the factory, they're pre-initialized for the HBA, so the HBA happily imports them and "creates simple volume" (aka jbod) using the factory initialization. Unfortunately, the factory init includes HBA metadata at both the start and end of the drive ... so I lose 1MB.
