While it would be a fun project, a toy like that would certainly exceed my feeble hardware experience and even more feeble budget. At the same time, I could make a compelling argument that this sort of arrangement: stripes of flash, is the future of tier-one storage. We already are seeing SSD devices which internally are stripes of flash.
