Slightly off-topic ... You can make Time Machine work with CIFS or NFS mounts by setting a system preference. The command is: defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1 I've had some success trying to get my father-in-law's system to back up to a drobo with this.
