Perhaps an expert could kindly chime in an opinion of making the drives one large zpool (rather than separate hard partitions) and using the various options within ZFS to ensure that there is always disk space available to the operating system (zpool reservation) ... but the more I sit and think, the more I'm not sure how that would work on the rpool.
There are so many ways of handling this.
