Some USB disks seem to ignore cache sync requests, which is deadly to zfs integrity. I am using LaCie d2 Quadra drives and have not observed any zfs issues at all. However, the external power supplies on these drives tend to fail so I am not sure if I would recommend them (my "solution" was to buy a box of spare power supplies).
