In terms of capability and preformance, esxi is well above anything your getting from vmware serve, even just using the free utilities. The issues to consider are complexity and hardware support. You shouldn't have a problem with hardware if you do your home work before you buy. However the complexity of what you are trying to accomplish may be more than you want to get into.
