Using fewer drives per vdev should certainly speed up resilver performance. It sounds you pool has one vdev with 22 drives. If you can afford to lose a bit of disk space, you will obtain more performance by splitting into more vdevs.
Since your test files are relatively large, they are likely maximally striped across the disks, which results in more seeks/reads in order to reconstruct the data block, or to reconstruct a disk.
