Just to be clear, Sun and the ZFS team are listening to customers on this issue. Pool shrink has been one of our top priorities for some time now.
It is unfortunately a very difficult problem, and will take some time to solve even with the application of all possible resources (including the majority of my time). We are updating CR 4852783 at least once a month with progress reports.
