Hi Tertius, Yes, I agree that the process is complex and mirroring the root pool improves downtime due to hardware failures, but I would still keep root pool snapshots.
Richard posted a follow up that you can attach a disk that is slight smaller after the integration of 6844090 into build 117: http://bugs.opensolaris.org/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6844090 I tried this and it does work. I can't remember now on which disks I tested this feature, but the disks were the same general size with slightly different geometry.
