We've got a very well documented procedure for building your
own kernel - see the developer reference links along the side of
http://www.opensolaris.org/os/community/on.

You don't need to go to dlc.sun.com to get that - just pull
in the source from hg.opensolaris.org, and follow the instructions
in the developer reference.


I can't comment on how complicated or not our process is compared
to the other OSes you mention.
