we are not talking about a RAID 5 array or an LVM. We are talking about a 
single FS setup as a zpool over the entire available disk space on an external 
USB HDD.

You are missing the point. A ZFS filesystem is not the same as a UFS filesystem on a device, the extra layer of the pool makes it closer to a RAID volume. You have to halt the pool before removing the device.

These posts do sound like someone who is blaming their parents after breaking a new toy before reading the instructions.
