iirc FORMAT.COM used to have pedantic little tests with confusing
error messages in it like this.  FDISK.COM would wipe certain magic
marker-labels when changing partition sizes, but linux 'fdisk'
naturally did no unrequested blanking, so it confused MS-DOS users.
The DOS geniuses put all their sacred garbage near the front of the
filesystem so Linux users would wipe the starts of partitions with 
'dd if=/dev/zero of=...'  to make FORMAT.COM willing to work again.  I
guess ZFS hides it better.
