As a follow up to the whole story, with the fantastic help of Victor, the failed pool is now imported and functional thanks to the redundancy in the meta data. This does however highlight the need and practical application of a fsck-like tool. Fine to say that if ZFS can't guarantee my data then I should restore from backups so I know what I've got, but in the case of this 42T device that would take days.
