This is actually probably a good idea for me, as buying that many disks right now would be a huge dent in the budget. Although it's for a good cause, I have a network of slowly overheating drives in USB cases with data spread all over the place. Bitrot is a daily concern. I guess I can go with an 8 disk raidz2 to start with; and add a second one later.
