In addition to the other answers given, I think another reason why this is common among Solaris sysadmins (though its not a practise I endorse) is the fact that we've been around longer than the usual Linux and Windoze "admins". Back when we started our careers, disks were relatively tiny, so one had no option but to split up /, /usr, /var, and so on if meaningful uptimes were to be achieved. With today's huge boot disks, I think the practise is somewhat deprecated.
