I get very acceptable performance out of my Sun Ultra-80 with 4x 450Mhz US-II CPUs and 4GB RAM. If you are building some super media streaming monster box, then, well, sure, you do. If you are building your average home NAS box though, it really isn't nessesary to get the latest and greatest hardware.
